The city of Aigues Mortes is generally unknown these days but hundreds of years ago it was Europe's centre of commerce. Goods like silks and spices, came from the East by sea and were sold all over Europe. The harbour had to constantly be cleared of silt and eventually the port was closed. Today its buildings, moat, etc are all pretty much as they were all those years ago. Every time I visit the city my skin still prickles because the city is out of this world. The Mayor works hard to bring in people to the area by constantly investing the the town and fun/interesting initiatives so its always busy. Its very French - culture, food, markets, way of life, etc so if you stay in our house you really feel like you have been away. The house is wonderful! Its located on the waters edge with amazing views of the marina and the ancient town. It was built in 2009 and designed to look like St Tropez. Some of the villas are owned by well known celebrities so its very exclusive. To top it off the area boasts 360 days of sunshine a year and, from my experience, they are not far wrong. It really is heaven on earth.
I own a cruise specialist called Ocean World Travel and love cruising. My favourite ship is the Black Watch which is operated by Fred Olsen Cruise Lines. I have been very lucky to cruise and travel all over the world. I have two sons who adore football and support Ipswich Town Football Club. Needless to say France is one of my favourite countries. When we first bought our house in Aigues Mortes we stayed for 3 months a year and hated coming home to the UK. We never intended to rent out our French home but the boys love football and prefer to stay in the UK, hopefully, only for the time being!
Aigues Mortes is a stunning ancient walled city. It was very famous centuries ago when it was the main port into which cargo, such as silks and spices, was delivered from the east. The port had to be regularly dredged because the silt built up so gradually it was replaced by Marseilles. Aigues Mortes has almost become unknown hundreds of years later apart from those very lucky travellers who discover it and are captured by its irresistible charm and beauty. It offers so much - amazing food and wine, watersports and horse riding, history, architecture, a photographers paradise, wonderful walks and beaches, shopping, friendly locals and unbeatable weather.
